About Artpara

ArtPara

In the composed word ArtPara, ‘Para’ does not mean ‘paralysis’, it refers to the practice of “accompanying, coexisting, being together.”
It has a broad meaning of ‘disabled and non-disabled people together, from different countries without any boundaries…art and healing together, peace and freedom together, respect for human life and environmental protection together.

ABOUT ARtPARA

How the ArtPara concept was born

The South Korean non-profit organization People with Disabilities and Friends of the Five Continents has established a traveling exhibition project called ArtPara.

The project was conceived by South Korean artist Kim Geun-Tae with the aim of developing the artistic potential of people with disabilities through culture and art. The organization supports the growth of artists with disabilities through the ArtPara project, striving to create a society in which people with disabilities participate in social activities and enjoy equal rights and well-being with non-disabled people.

The ArtPara exhibition, conceived as a kind of cultural Olympics, currently consists of about a hundred works by disabled artists from 30 different countries.

The project is funded by the government of South Korea and has received the support of major international institutions.

Since 2015, ArPara has been held in various prestigious locations and events, including the Berlin Wall, the 2016 Brazilian Paralympic Games, the 2017 United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, the 2018 Pyeongchang Paralympic Games, the 2018 UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the Hangaram Art Museum at the Seoul Arts Centre in 2019, the National Asian Cultural Centre in 2020, and the Gwangju Biennale in 2022. This exhibition is in line with the values and ideals of the Olympic Games, which symbolize the solidarity and integration of the five continents. It unfolds as a magnificent journey, aimed at promoting a healthy community through the transformative power of art, with the promise of continuing the journey into the future.

The last edition of ArtPara took place in 2024 in Paris, during the paralympic games.
